Former apprentice climbs property career ladder with promotion

A former apprentice with Barratt Homes is celebrating his career success with the reputable builder following his promotion to Trainee Assistant Site Manager.

William Yates, 25, joined the developer in 2016 as a Carpentry Apprentice and has since worked his way up to a new role within the Site Management team.

Now he has progressed to an exciting venture at Brooklands in Milton Keynes, he has been given more responsibility and a chance to take his career in the industry to the next level.

William, who’s from Northampton, said:

“The work is a massive step up from being a carpenter, I am now not just relying on myself to carry out tasks but also the trades that I organise as well to carry out the works that need to be done to build a five star home.

“Barratt is one of the original house builders in the country and continues to be one step ahead of the competition in this industry and the evidence of that is from us being the only large scale national five star housebuilder in the country.

“No days are really the same which is really good because it keeps things interesting and it’s good to work in a fast paced environment.”

There are a variety of options available when the apprenticeship is completed, including working for one of the Barratt Homes subcontractors, becoming self-employed or even the chance to work as a tradesperson all over the country.

Speaking of the apprenticeship, William added:

“I would definitely recommend the Barratt Homes apprenticeship because the scheme provides you with everything you need to be able to excel in the trade that you have chosen. It will also give you a huge trade background knowledge that is priceless should you want to think about going down the site management route.”

Andrew Swindell, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said:

“Employees like William are a wonderful example of the hard work and dedication our construction teams maintain, and the reward that pays off when you show commitment.

“Through opportunities that we provide our apprentices with, they are able to develop and uphold invaluable skills they may not have had before, which they can utilise for the rest of their career as he is proving now.”
