Homebuilder donates £1,000 to Lulu's appeal as part of community fund

Marking the first contribution of its Community Fund scheme, David Wilson Homes has donated £1,000 to Lulu’s Appeal to help a young girl from Bedford receive vital cancer treatment in New York.

Five-year-old Lulu was diagnosed with a high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, shortly after she started school.

Rob De Vries, Lulu’s father, said:

“Lulu is such a special girl and we don’t want to lose her. We are extremely grateful for this donation.

“We hadn’t had many large donations before receiving the contribution from David Wilson Homes. It opens the door, gets us a step closer to New York and for this we are very thankful.”

Recently, she has had three weeks of radiotherapy and is now undergoing immunotherapy which will last until the end of May 2019, after which there is just a two-month window to raise the £162,000 required for potentially life-saving treatment in America.

David Wilson Homes’ donation is part of its Community Fund, in which the homebuilder donates £1,000 to a charity of its choice each month for the duration of the year.

Rob continued:

“The scheme is a really nice touch; something that gives back to the local communities and makes a difference. It’s a completely unique gesture.

“We’re inviting the public to generate some fundraising ideas for Lulu’s Appeal and generally just spread the message of what we’re trying to achieve.”

There are just 90 cases of Lulu’s condition in the UK each year and to be enlisted onto the trials in New York, relapse needs to be avoided during the two months prior. With this form of neuroblastoma, there is a 50% relapse rate.

John Dillon, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes South Midlands, said:

“We’re very pleased to be able to contribute towards Lulu’s Appeal, as it’s such a worthwhile cause and we hope this goes a long way to ensuring Lulu gets the treatment she needs.

“Our Community Fund scheme is set to help a variety of charities in need and we wish Lulu and her family the very best in their efforts to raise the funds required.”
