Bronze medal-winning Team GB athlete from Leicester thanks company who sponsored trip to Special Olympics

A Leicester athlete who won a bronze medal at the recent Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi has thanked a leading property consultancy who helped make it happen.

Julie Freestone travelled to the capital of the United Arab Emirates to compete in women’s basketball with Team GB thanks to sponsorship from the development team at Fisher German’s Ashby office.

Julie and her teammates competed against teams from the USA, Serbia, and India, and finished the competition in third place, earning them a bronze medal.

The Special Olympics is for athletes with intellectual disabilities, including autism, Down Syndrome and other learning disabilities.

Athletes have to fund all their expenses themselves – and Fisher German’s donation was the difference between Julie travelling to the Games or missing out entirely.

Upon her return to the UK after the Games, Julie paid a visit to Fisher German’s Ashby office to personally thank the firm for helping to fund her trip.

She said:

“I’m so grateful to Fisher German for their generosity – it really meant the world to me.

“Without their sponsorship, I simply wouldn’t have been able to travel to Abu Dhabi, and I wouldn’t have won my bronze medal.

“Competing at the Special Olympics is a memory that will last a lifetime for me, so I have to thank Fisher German for helping me get there.”

Julie has been playing basketball for more than 10 years and her journey to the Special Olympics came after previously competing in the UK National Games in basketball where she won a joint gold medal with Scotland and a bronze medal after competing against the male team.

Ben Marshalsay, head of development at Fisher German, was delighted with how well Julie had done.

“We knew Julie was great athlete, so when we heard she was struggling with her funding to attend the Special Olympics, we were only too happy to pledge our support.

“We’re all so pleased we were able to get her to Abu Dhabi so she could compete, and the fact she won a bronze medal was the icing on the cake.

“It was a pleasure to welcome her to our Ashby office to congratulate her personally, and we’d be happy to support her again in four years’ time."
