Derby construction firm hoping to complete hat-trick of prestigious industry awards

A Derby construction firm is in the running to complete a hat-trick of awards after being nominated for two prestigious industry prizes.

Davlyn Construction has been shortlisted for an LABC regional award for the £3m Piazza building at Mercia Marina in Willington along with a RICS award for Ruskin Mill in Birmingham.

The Piazza building complements the existing Boardwalk at the marina, also built by Davlyn, which was named Britain’s Best Small Commercial Building at the final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards in 2015, after being voted overall winner at the East Midlands regional LABC award ceremony.

The Piazza, designed by Repton based architects Bi-Design, is a four-storey complex at the marina which opened in early 2018 and is home to pharmaceutical firm Bionical and houses a tapas-style Indian restaurant, art gallery, homeware and jewellery shops.

The largest business to business awards in the building control sector, the LABC Regional Building Excellence Awards recognise quality in all types of building projects. The awards ceremony takes place later this month.

Davlyn has also been shortlisted for a RICS award for the transformation of Ruskin Mill in Birmingham which was completed this year.

This was a phased refurbishment within a Grade II listed, former Victorian factory in the historic jewellery quarter of Birmingham as a learning centre for young adults with special needs. Workshop spaces were created on the ground floor where students can create jewellery, whether in metal or leather.

On the lower roof over the ground floor an urban farm was developed where students can grow fruit and vegetables that is used in the purpose-built Hive café/bakery. Therapeutic rooms have also been created on the second floor including a transformation movement area, massage therapy, art therapy studio and living skills room.

The RICS awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. They celebrate the achievements and successes of RICS professionals and their impact on local communities. The awards ceremony takes place later this month in Edgbaston.

David Gaskin, Director at Davlyn Construction, said he was extremely proud that the company had been nominated for two further awards.

He said:

“We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for these awards which are renowned throughout the construction industry. These nominations are a testament to our talented team and the excellent work that they do.”
