J Tomlinson breaks ground in preparation for brand new golf clubhouse

J Tomlinson has begun the second phase of works at Whittington Heath Golf Club, which will see the construction of a brand new members’ clubhouse.

The construction, maintenance and refurbishment specialist has been on site since February, having been appointed as the main contractor to manage the club’s major redevelopment programme in response to HS2 railway plans. The new route is scheduled to run straight through the middle of the current course.

To ensure the future of the historic and well-loved club, which has been active since 1886, works will also entail construction of a new greenkeeper’s compound, halfway house, practice range, new access road, new car park, creation of five new holes, and the reworking of five existing holes.

The first phase of works, which progressed ahead of schedule, included the creation of the new access road and car park. The current club will remain live and occupied throughout the redevelopment.

A ground-breaking ceremony was hosted at the club on Thursday 18th April, where members, stakeholders, and local media professionals gathered to celebrate work starting on the highly-anticipated new clubhouse.

The new building, which is due to be completed in summer 2020, will be highly energy-efficient, incorporating features such as LED lighting, ground source heat pumps, a rainwater harvesting system, as well as rainwater soakaways.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered in the original clubhouse, where they enjoyed refreshments and afternoon tea, which was sponsored by J Tomlinson.

Darroch Baker, construction managing director at J Tomlinson, commented:

“We’re excited to begin this highly-anticipated stage of Whittington Heath Golf Club’s redevelopment programme. This is a landmark project for J Tomlinson, and the volume of enthusiasm from members of the club is great to see. We look forward to managing construction of the new clubhouse over the coming year.”

Richard Harding, captain of Whittington Heath Golf Club, added:

“We are delighted to bring on board to our HS2 programme team such an experienced and professional company. Their commitment to using local suppliers is welcomed. We are so excited that our new clubhouse will be energy efficient and environmentally-friendly.”
