Accountancy company celebrates its 30th anniversary with party and charity effort

An independent accountancy firm which is headquartered in Derby has celebrated its 30th birthday in style and used the occasion to help a local charity.

Maple was started by Jenny Priestley on March 11, 1989 and has now grown to three branches in Birmingham, Manchester, and London.

Ironically, Maple is based in the same building in Friar Gate where Jenny used to work for another firm. She returned to work there after having her first child, Sara, but was not comfortable with the attitudes and comments that would now be considered outdated.

“I resigned and then set up on my own from home working in the study,” she said.

When she started in the business 40 years tax returns were a paper document. And when she set up on her own her first computer was built for her a at a cost of £1,300 even though it was nothing more than a glorified typewriter. The internet and various programmes did not exist.

Since those days Jenny has had two sons - the eldest James works as a client care co-ordinator - for the company -  and another daughter, and the business has grown organically. There is a team of 25 staff dealing with several hundred clients.

“We tend to work with entrepreneurs and SMEs,” said Jenny. “In addition to accountancy we specialise in giving owners advice on how to grow their business and increase their profitability.

“The industry has changed a lot but I am delighted that we have overcome the changes and have grown from strength to strength. We are looking to take on more employees, including three in April.”

The company celebrated with a party at Pride Park stadium for its team members, clients and friends.

In addition, the company decided to mark the 30th birthday by giving something back to the community. A team of employees from Derby walked two miles each day for 30 days to raise money through sponsorship for Me & Dee, which provides holidays for adults and children facing life-threatening and life-shortening conditions.
