Leicestershire accountancy firm makes a splash at Swimarathon

Leicestershire chartered accountants Newby Castleman took part in Oadby Rotary Club’s 4th annual Swimarathon earlier this month, sponsoring the event to raise money for several local charities and international projects.

The Swimarathon took place at Parklands Leisure Centre in Oadby with the firm’s team, the Newby Castleman Dolphins, entering the relay competition for the fourth year running. The event was compèred as in previous years by Newby Castleman partner John Griffin, who oversaw 24 teams with a total of 98 swimmers competing to swim as many lengths as possible in 55 minutes.

The Dolphins were led by team captain Caroline Walpole, Head of Audit at Newby Castleman, who was accompanied by her colleagues Theresa Gutteridge, Lesley Frost,

Jacquelyn Kimber and Dennis Murphy. The team completed over 150 lengths in the allotted time, placing them third.

John Griffin, partner at Newby Castleman, said:

“Our team has always enjoyed participating in the Swimarathon and we were happy to participate and sponsor the event again this year, beating our former record of lengths in the process! The Swimarathon is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for so many great charities and causes at home and overseas. A great many members of staff at Newby Castleman personally sponsored the event in addition to our official sponsorship, and we hope to continue our support next year.”

Roger Neuberg, main organiser of the Swimarathon event, said:

“It was excellent to have Newby Castleman’s support once more for this our 4th Swimarathon, both as a sponsor and by entering the Newby Castleman Dolphins team. The Dolphins did very well and finished in 3rd position with 154 lengths. John has been a brilliant compère throughout all four Swimarathons and is already booked for the next. We hope to see the Dolphins again on 1st March 2020 for our 5th Swimarathon.”

60% of funds raised will go to eight Leicestershire charities: Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes, Oadby & Wigston Community First Responders, Rainbows, Age UK Oadby & Wigston, Peter Le Marchant Trust, Ash Field Academy, Birkett House School and One Roof Leicester.

30% of the amount raised is to go towards the Rotary Club’s ongoing sponsorship of Kasupe Primary School in Zambia via Mary’s Meals. This sponsorship provides a daily meal for each of the school’s 266 pupils for a full year, a project which the Rotary Club intends to continue supporting. The remaining 10% of monies raised will go towards the Club’s General Purposes Fund, which provides aid in times of need locally and internationally.
