Poor HMRC performance failing small businesses ahead of Making Tax Digital

FSB National Chairman Mike Cherry:

“With just 25 days to go until the launch of Making Tax Digital (MTD), these latest performance figures from HMRC are very concerning.

“To have one in four customers being forced to wait more than 10 minutes to speak to an advisor is simply unacceptable with such major changes on the horizon.

“Sole traders know their businesses inside out – most of them are not tax specialists though. For many, help over the phone with HMRC paperwork is vital. HMRC must recognise that a lot of small firms still lack access to basic broadband, meaning they struggle to access its digital platform.

“A lot of rural firms communicate with the taxman by post, but a quarter are being forced to wait longer than the 15 day target for responses. That’s leaving small firms in the lurch at a time when HMRC is encouraging behaviour change.”
