Budding entrepreneurs create 'pop-up' market at intu Broadmarsh

240 students from across Nottingham launched, promoted and sold their own products on Saturday 2 March as part of a unique ‘pop-up’ market experience at intu Broadmarsh.

The shopping centre was visited by 15 to 18-year-olds from across the city who are competing in this year’s Young Enterprise Company Programme. The charity’s entrepreneurial programmes enable students to create a unique business and go head to head with other students for the chance to compete in a European-wide business competition.

The day – which was officially opened by the new chair of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter, Susan Hallam MBE - introduced the students to many life-essential facets such as leadership, management, hard work, personal drive, courtesy, resilience to overcome disappointment and win through to success.

Nigel Wheatley, general manager for intu in Nottingham, said:

“Working with the community is really important to us, so we were delighted to welcome students from Nottingham Young Enterprise and support them by hosting them at intu Broadmarsh. The pop-up market was a great way to give local students an insight in to the fast-paced world of retail, and really gave our customers something a little bit extra while visiting our retailers.”

Dave Perkins from Nottingham Young Enterprise said:

“It was incredibly worthwhile to bring our students into the heart of Nottingham city centre, especially allowing them to gain real retail insight on the mall at intu Broadmarsh. This is the first of five stages of this competition, and we hope to see some of Nottingham’s talented students compete at an international level in August.

“The day was a celebration of our students’ ingenuity, creativity, innovation, manufacturing, quality control, branding, marketing and customer interaction. It required them to plan, listen, organise, administrate, motivate each other and work as a team. We are really pleased with how the pop-up event went and delighted to have worked in partnership with the team at intu to create this opportunity.”
