Waterside Shopping Centre Announces 2019 Charity Partner

After raising over £5,000 in 2018, the Waterside Shopping Centre has announced it is to continue supporting St Barnabas Hospice in 2019.

The Waterside has worked with the hospice since 2017 when St Barnabas won a public vote to become the centre's charity of the year.

In the last two years, the centre and St Barnabas have collaborated on a wide range of events, including last year's highly successful fashion show and Christmas Wrapping Station. The charity has also had several stalls and promotional events in the centre, such as the visit of its ‘Before I Die’ wall during Dying Matters Awareness Week, taking advantage of free space in the centre.

This year’s fundraising activity has started already with the opening of an 8,000 square foot pop-up shop, and the Waterside sponsoring the charity’s Forget Me Not appeal.

The pop-up shop will be open daily until the end of March offering a wide range of products, including kids vintage, vintage crockery, evening wear, wedding dresses, ladies wear, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones-themed items, along with a tropical picnic garden area, gaming zone and reading area. Some of the items for sale were donated to St Barnabas, which in turn gave them to Lincoln Prison for inmates to upcycle and return to the charity to sell.

The centre is also sponsoring St Barnabas’ Forget Me Not appeal, where supporters can dedicate a beautiful iron Forget Me Not to be a part of a breath-taking installation at Lincoln Castle running from 6th - 21st April 2019.

Caroline Swindin, Corporate Fundraiser at St Barnabas, is grateful for the continued support the charity has received from the centre.

"We've established a really good relationship with the Waterside Shopping Centre, and we're delighted that the centre has decided to continue supporting us. It really does mean a lot and will help us raise the funds we need to continue our work. Choosing St Barnabas as Charity of the Year not only provides opportunities for staff to fundraise, but also learn a new skill, or tick something off their bucket list. I will be there every step of the way to make sure they are supported with ideas to have fun, whilst raising valuable funds to continue the work we do.”

Dean Cross, general manager at the Waterside Shopping Centre, added:

"We've enjoyed working with Caroline and the team at St Barnabas. It's been a real team effort, and the staff at our retailers have been fantastic, giving up their free time to get involved in fundraising activity and helping us make a real difference to the charity. We're aiming to make 2019 our biggest and best fundraising year so far!"

The centre is currently developing its fundraising plans for the year ahead but the Waterside’s team have already signed up for St Barnabas’ Inflatable Colour Dash, and It’s A Knockout.

St Barnabas was established as a charitable trust in 1979. Since then more than 100,000 Lincolnshire people have received free, high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care and support.

Today, St Barnabas, which requires £11.5 million a year to provide its services, runs 26 charity shops across Lincolnshire, employs 330 staff and has 1,000 volunteers who support patients and their families.
