Trainee managers present to the professionals

Nottingham College Hospitality and Tourism Management students were put through their paces earlier this month, as they presented their research findings to an audience of industry experts as part of their degree-level course.

The group of 15 students were tasked with researching and presenting a special business conference Engaging with the future of Nottingham’s Visitor Economy at the Motorpoint Arena.

The event was sponsored by Nottingham BID (Business Improvement District) and Nottingham Trent University Business School, and included a number of seminars which were put together and presented by the students to a number of local business representatives, including Julie Oliver, HR Manager at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, who said:

“I was very impressed with the organisation of the undergraduate conference and I enjoyed the flow and interaction. The host was confident, the guest speaker was insightful, and the participation was informative and fun. I’m really pleased I had the opportunity to attend and I hope the students enjoyed it too.”

Nottingham College Service Sector Management BA (Hons) Course Leader, Robert Seals, said:

“As an entirely student-focused initiative, this has been an excellent opportunity for our students to undertake contemporary research of a vocational nature, and it gave us the opportunity to forge closer links with our industry partners.

“The project provided a more realistic approach to the students’ studies and improved their skills and confidence in personalising, organising and developing their research, and presenting their findings to a large audience in a professional business environment.

“The group really engaged with the initiative and should be very proud of their achievements, and as ambassadors for their course and the College.”

Aleksandra Kruszelniuk, 21, was responsible for delivering a seminar alongside her group. She said:

“I really enjoyed the whole process of gathering all the information and doing the research for our topic. Standing up in front of so many people was nerve-racking, especially so many industry representatives, but the experience really helped with my confidence, my public speaking and presentation skills.

“I’d really like to become a manager within the service sector industry one day, so having the opportunity to be part of something like this, and the chance to network with businesses, has been great. I’ll definitely take a lot away from the project and I’m sure it will benefit me in the future when I get a full-time job.”

The conference was also supported by Foundation Degree Events Management students who organised the event logistics, as well as Level 3 Photography students who helped to document it.
