Leics law firm launches specialist banking litigation department

LEADING law firm Nelsons has expanded its banking and finance offering with a specialist dispute resolution department, now based in Leicester, to meet growing demand.

Partner and solicitor Simon Trees – who joined Nelsons in 2011 and has more than 18 years of experience in the sector – will be heading up the new group, which deals with contentious banking and finance issues and which complements the services offered by the corporate team on non-contentious banking matters.

He will be joined by property litigation expert, Alistair Haggerty; Kiren Cox, who qualified as a solicitor in 2018; and Farrah Khalid, who joined the team this January having recently qualified.

Simon said:

“Nelsons has been dealing with contentious banking and finance work for more than a decade, but it was never focused on as a core department in its own right. However, the banking landscape has witnessed great change over the past year – particularly due to developments such as peer-to-peer lending and blockchain – and we’ve had an increase in the number of new business enquiries we’ve been receiving as a result.

“Contentious banking and finance is a niche but highly sought-after and prestigious area of law and we wanted to expand the team and build a centre of excellence in the East Midlands.”

The launch of the new department in Leicester comes after Nelsons further bolstered its corporate services and Leicester-based team with the re-appointment of former partner Chris Rees, who originally joined the law firm as a trainee in 1998. Simon and his team will be working closely with Chris and the Leicester corporate team, which specialises in advising on corporate finance and banking work.

Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, said:

“At the start of the New Year we launched our ambitious plans for the future, where we hope to become the law firm of choice both locally and in the wider region.

“We set a specific objective to achieve growth in Leicester and at the end of December, seven months into our financial year, we have seen a c12% growth on the last financial year in our Leicester office and are on course for our strongest year so far in the city.

“The new banking and finance litigation department, along with the strengthening of our corporate services offering in Leicester, further reinforces our commitment to the city and the East Midlands.”
