The 21st century artefacts, which will stay buried for 100 years, were carefully chosen by students and staff. Items included copies of the day’s local and national newspapers, pictures and information on the current fashion, mobile phones and computer games, letters from the pupils, drawings of what the pupils want schools in the future to look like, petrol receipts to show the current price as well as information about the free school projects and working for Springwell and Wellspring Academy Trust.
The time capsule burial was attended by teachers and staff, Midlands contractor G F Tomlinson, members of the Wellspring Academy Trust and the local authority.
Located on Macauley Drive in Lincoln, the school is one of three alternative academies being built by G F Tomlinson in Lincolnshire for Wellspring Academy Trust through the Department for Education framework. The academies will create more than 180 places for students aged 4-16, providing learning opportunities for children and young people who are unable to attend mainstream schools due to social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) reasons. Two further Springwell Alternative Academies are being built on New Beacon Road in Grantham and at the former Monks Dyke Tennyson secondary school in Mablethorpe.
Once complete next summer, the Springwell Alternative Academy Lincoln will accommodate 63 pupils aged 4-16 and will feature specialised teaching spaces, an assembly hall, SEN (Special Educational Needs) therapy room, hygiene room, fitness suite, parents’ room and multiple use games area.
Building has progressed well since works started over the summer, with the structure now complete and watertight, and internal works underway.
Gary Spencer, project manager at G F Tomlinson, said:
“Watching the students bury the time capsule was a great experience for everyone involved. The children were all really excited to step foot on the building site of their new school and it’s a pleasure for us to be able to accommodate events like this that allow them to get involved.”
Lisa Ashcroft-Day, executive principal designate at Springwell Lincoln City Academy, said:
“We are really excited to see the development of our new building in Lincoln, having worked closely with G F Tomlinson to create a purpose-built school to meet the needs of children in the locality area.
“Springwell Lincolnshire is committed to providing the best possible education and genuine care for children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. Our dedicated staff are passionate about having high expectations and achieving positive outcomes for the children and young people of Lincolnshire. The facilities within our new school will allow us to be even more creative with our curriculum and meeting the needs of each individual child.”
Clare Stevens, strategic project manager at Wellspring Academy Trust, said:
“The progress on site since the last visit has been phenomenal. G F Tomlinson has facilitated the development and initial construction phases superbly, operating flexibly as our thinking has developed. Marking the building watertight today with pupils burying a time capsule was a key moment for us, bringing home the reality of all the hard work and planning leading into this project. The facility is shaping up as promised and it was wonderful to celebrate with our pupils through their development of time capsule items, leaving next century’s pupils – shovels at the ready – with something to look forward to!”
