Printing company investment leads to prestigious award

Leicestershire based print and communications company, The Taylor Bloxham Group has been names as winners of this year’s 1814 Production Excellence award.

Koenig and Bauer, a print machinery manufacturer, select a customer to receive the award every year in recognition of demonstrating a dramatic improvement in production performance.

The 2018 winner, the Taylor Bloxham Group Ltd switched from Heidelberg to Koenig and Bauer when they installed a high-spec Rapida 106 in April. Since the change, the company has reduced make-ready times and increased output across a large number of projects.

The printing group was presented with the award at a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel in London. The award was made based on the performance of three print jobs using the new printing press: a 60,000 catalogue run printed in CMYK with two special colours, produced 16% faster than previous year and two auction catalogues produced 25% and 40% quicker than estimated.

The 1814 Production Excellence award commemorates the first power-driven press which was commissioned in 1814 for The Times newspaper. The presentation was followed by a talk by Chris Bolton, Technical Colour Specialist at Taylor Bloxham Group about the company’s recent ISO 12647 (Professional) accreditation and by the company’s CEO Robert Lockwood on the future of the group.

Robert believes the award represents the benefits of the group’s long-term investment plan:

“The Rapida 106 was the latest step in a £4 million programme of investment in new equipment that enabled us to print higher volumes faster while simultaneously improving quality. The installation only took place in April and our clients are already seeing and feeling the benefits of the new press.

“Our focus across all of our brands is to deliver excellence and best-in-class service. Continual investment in state of the art machinery like the Rapida 106 goes a long way in helping us exceed our already high standards,” says Robert.

In September, the Taylor Bloxham Group celebrated becoming the first print company in the world to receive ISO 12647:2013 certification at a professional level.

“Our achievement in becoming the very first company to receive the ISO12647: 2013 ‘professional level’ really ties in with this award,” explains Chris Bolton. “Reaching the necessary standard for precision printing, colour accuracy and consistency is down to machinery like the Rapida 106.”

Koenig & Bauer (UK) Sales Director, Chris Scully stated

“We are delighted to select Taylor Bloxham for our annual 1814 Production Excellence Award. The levels of performance across the three jobs selected were exceptional. Their name is synonymous with the highest of quality in print. However, this award also demonstrates that from job to job, regardless of the quality level required, our presses will deliver performance increases.

“We applaud the whole team at Taylor Bloxham for driving the press to the fantastic levels of performance they achieved and look forward to learning about further successes for their business,” adds Chris.

Taylor Bloxham is celebrating its 80th anniversary of trading this year and posted its highest ever turnover at the end of 2017.

Based at different locations across Leicester, the four divisions of the Taylor Bloxham Group (Taylor Bloxham, Fastant, Instore and Mailbox) enable the company to offer a joined-up approach to printing, storing, distributing and mailing marketing communications for a wide range of industries.

The group’s growing portfolio of clients includes Crown Paints, Bentley, BAFTA and David Austin Roses.
