School pupils take a walk on the wild side at The Wickets with the RSPB

Pupils from Ecton Village Primary Academy have taken a walk on the wild side at David Wilson Homes’ Earls Barton development The Wickets following an educational visit from the RSPB.
The school’s Hedgehogs class were invited to the Main Road development for their first field trip to meet with Tim Mobbs, an RSPB volunteer, and learnt how they can give nature a home.
During the visit, the pupils searched the show home garden to identify different homes for wildlife.
They were also able to view a hogilo, a home for hedgehogs, which has been placed in the garden by David Wilson Homes to welcome all prickly pals to the development.
Tim said: “The RSPB recognises that it is extremely important to encourage young children to develop an interest in wildlife and discover how they can look after nature in their own home environment.
“This activity, hosted in the show home garden, was an excellent way to lead local school pupils in the right direction and help them discover how to give nature a home and to have some fun.
“The enthusiastic pupils were also given the task of creating their own apple bird feeders which involves removing the apple core and pushing sunflower seeds into the top for birds to feast on.”
Kate Cleaver, Principal at Ecton Village Primary School, said:
“The children had a lovely morning learning about environments and habitats for wild animals. They particularly enjoyed learning about the hogilo and now want their classroom re-named The Hogilo as it is where the Hedgehog class live!
“As a small village school we are very lucky to be surrounded by wildlife and the children now know how we can support the animals through the winter months.”
Whist the Hedgehogs class aptly learned about creating homes for hedgehogs, they were also taught the significance of providing for birds and bee-friendly planting.
