Wildlife at the heart of new homes development in Coventry

Wildlife at the heart of new homes development in Coventry

Barratt Homes North Midlands is preserving wildlife at its new development in Canley thanks to its work with the local authorities.

The new site Deram Parke, located on Prior Deram Walk, will provide 250 homes to the area and will simultaneously protect some of Britain’s native species - of which more than half are in decline1.

Residents living at the development will be able to benefit from access to green open space which has been proven to be associated with better mental and physical health2.

Deram Parke has officially been named as a development that will achieve ‘net gains’ for biodiversity once it is complete.

As part of the development, the housebuilder will be retaining and enhancing around two hectares of woodland and grass habitats and will create new grassland and wetland habitats on site.

As Deram Parke is also in close proximity to an ancient woodland within Park Wood Local Nature Reserve, the homebuilder is working closely with the local authorities on a 30 year management plan for improving the condition of it. Park Wood acts as a unique habitat for a variety of species, including woodpeckers, nuthatches and a range of butterflies, reptiles and amphibians.

Activities to increase the biodiversity value of the woodland include removing exotic species that make it difficult for native species to thrive.

This development will also provide improved access for residents to an important wild space, with potential for education and learning about nature, as well as the enjoyment and health benefits that access to these environments can bring.

David Lowe, Warwickshire’s County Council Ecologist, said:

“Wildlife is in serious decline both globally and locally. It is essential that developments deliver biodiversity net gains to stop species from becoming extinct. We all have our roles to play and it is fantastic that Barratt Homes and many other construction companies are promoting biodiversity on their sites and, when necessary, contributing to enhancements on other nearby wildlife sites.”

Jan Ruston, Sales Director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said:

“We are delighted to have worked with Coventry and Warwickshire County Council ecologists to identify opportunities for biodiversity on and off our development at Deram Parke to ensure wildlife has a home alongside new residents.

“As a five star housebuilder it is of paramount importance to us that whilst we provide quality new homes for residents in the area, we also look after local nature.

“We look forward to seeing how Deram Parke progresses over the next few months and what wildlife we can start to see living there.”
