Inspiring Business by Sharing Success

National Small Biz 100 campaign highlights Nottinghamshire Business

Federation of Small Businesses member, Flood Protection Solutions, has been selected for this year’s prestigious Small Biz 100 list.

The Nottingham based business was chosen, along with 16 other FSB members, for the 2018 list run by the grassroots Small Business Saturday campaign. The initiative features small businesses and self-employed people from across the UK, focusing on those who work with other small businesses and support their local community.

Each of the businesses will be promoted on social media in the 100 days running up to Small Business Saturday, which this year will be held on December 1.

Flood Protection Solutions will be celebrated on 4th November 2018.

Flood Protection Solutions was established by a young engineer educated at the University of Nottingham, Simon Crowther, whose house was flooded in 2007. After much research into Flood Defence systems, barriers and pumps, Simon was inspired to implement measures in his own home. When the floods came again in 2012 the barriers kept the water back and his house safe.

Simon Crowther plans to use the Small Business Saturday campaign to drive awareness of flood risk, he told us:

“67% of people in the UK are unaware of their flood risk. We’re excited to be nominated in the SBS scheme. We’re in such a niche field that often goes unrecognised, but being included in this campaign brings Flood Protection Solutions a little more into the mainstream."

The FSB East Midlands Young Entrepreneur for 2018 added:

“This is a great opportunity to have our small business showcased. We’re busy working with research groups at Cranfield University along with field operatives from the big water companies. We feel that if house-builders committed to supplying permeable driveways on all new builds a large percentage of flooding could be prevented.“

David Dexter, Regional Chair for the East Midlands said:

“A huge congratulations to all those chosen for this year’s Small Biz 100. It’s great to have one of our members named in such a prestigious campaign.

“Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity to celebrate the successes of the 5.7 million small firms and self-employed across the UK. It helps spread the word about the services and products small firms offer their local communities and why they should be supported all year round.”

Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday campaign, said: “We were delighted to see so many great small businesses entering this year’s Small Biz 100.

"It’s great to see so many FSB members in this year’s list, and we look forward to celebrating their success in the coming months.”

FSB is a key supporter of the campaign, which is now in its sixth year.

During last year’s campaign, an estimated £748 million was spent with small businesses across the UK, up four per cent from the previous year. A total of 87 per cent of local authorities took part in the event, while more than 115,000 tweets were sent, reaching more than 115 million people.
