J Tomlinson supports wellbeing projects at supported living scheme

J Tomlinson is supporting two resident-led community projects taking place at a supported-living scheme in Mastin Moor, Chesterfield.

The company has donated £500 to help set up two initiatives led by residents of emh care & support – the charity arm of emh group, with whom J Tomlinson currently works to deliver repairs and maintenance services to homes across the East Midlands.

emh care & support specialises in helping vulnerable people live an independent life through the provision of support, care, housing and enriching activities tailored to the unique needs of each individual.

Residents at the organisation’s Mastin Moor site – which comprises ground floor shared accommodation and a two-bedroom bungalow designed for individuals with complex needs - have been working with scheme staff to get two highly-anticipated projects up and running; one is the establishment of an allotment area, whilst the other will see the creation of a woodland trail towards the rear of the site.

Supplier Travis Perkins is also supporting the initiative by providing tools and materials which will help emh care & support and its residents maintain their newly-created enrichment areas.

The initiative is part of a resident-led project aiming to enable emh care & support service users and residents to ‘develop new skills and do something that is active and meaningful, and that they have control over.’ By promoting healthy eating, exercise and wellbeing, staff hope that the new enrichment areas will benefit residents by encouraging calmness and friendship, helping individuals to feel less isolated.

The project is the result of a long-term vision of support worker, Garry Fothergill, who has dreamed of setting up such an initiative for over ten years. Garry commented:

“We have wanted to do something like this for so long, but it’s a big task, and we needed much more external support. Thanks to the compassion of our suppliers – such as J Tomlinson and Travis Perkins – as well as engagement from our local communities, we are now able to see our vision come to life. This is a really exciting chapter for emh care & support and our residents – all of whom are really looking forward to developing their skills and getting in touch with nature.”

As well as making a monetary donation, staff at J Tomlinson got their hands dirty by helping clear weeds and overgrown bushes in preparation for a woodland trail path which will be used by residents and the local community.

Martin Ardron, operations manager at J Tomlinson, commented:

“As a company, we aim to benefit our customers and communities on a wider scale, and we are proud to be involved in supporting these two rewarding projects which will benefit so many people. We are looking forward to seeing the woodland garden and the allotments in action!”

In January 2018, J Tomlinson was awarded a £10m contract to support the delivery of a responsive repairs and maintenance service for emh homes, covering properties across Nottingham, South Derbyshire, Leicester, Loughborough and Northamptonshire.

As part of the contract, the Nottingham-based company also undertakes heating repairs across emh care & support sites, which includes nursing homes, supported living schemes and temporary accommodation.

Founded in the 1950s, J Tomlinson operates primarily across South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and the West Midlands, offering a range of integrated building services which include construction, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), facilities management, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance and regeneration. The firm is a leading provider to the social housing sector, working with clients such as Ashfield District Council, Nottingham City Homes, South Yorkshire Housing Association, Midland Heart, Derwent Living and Home Group.
