Birmingham shoes a sellout success to empower women

A Birmingham shoemaker, who has been recognised as a leading light in the footwear industry, has seen her latest collection sell out before even hitting the shelves.

Shoes by Shaherazad’s new “Boss Lady” collection aims to empower the busy modern woman with up to 18 hours of guaranteed pain free wear.

Owner Shaherazad Umbreen, from Kings Norton, who donates the profit from sales of each pair of shoes to help young girls and women to access education has now supported 5,000 women from around the globe thanks to latest sales.

“For me my shoes will always be about more than just a product,” says Shaherazad, who works with a metalworker in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter to craft the innovative shoe designs.

“By design and ethos Shoes by Shaherazad empower women to make a difference.”

The collection, which was named to celebrate the growing she-boss ethos in the UK to empower women through true gender equality, sold out four of the six unique designs in 48 hours – nearly a month before they will be available to wear.

Testament to their growing popularity the latest sell out success follows interest from celebrities including British Supermodel Alexa Chung, actress Jane Danson and West End Star Verity Rushworth.

The concept behind the 18 hour heel was born from Shaherazad’s desire to find heels that would be comfortable for busy business women from the start of the working day, taking them from boardroom to bar effortlessly.

The designer who was recognised as an ‘exceptional British talent’ in the prestigious Footwear Friends Annual Awards is now looking to develop the collection further with new lines.

“These shoes are all about empowering yourself and empowering others,” said Shaherazad who welcomed the sales with every penny of the profits going directly to support a woman or girl living in poverty to gain an education.

“A She-Boss who treats herself to my shoes is also helping someone living in poverty to gain a chance to become a she-boss too,” she said

Shaherazad personally designs the “shoellery” straps that are a completely new concept created by the Birmingham business woman to provide interchangeable looks.

The embellishments are then created by specialist metal workers in the Jewellery Quarter who bring Shaherazad’s innovative creations to life using a unique mix of traditional metal bashing and also 3D printing.
