Purpose Media toasts ten years of success

A Derbyshire creative agency which has grown from a two-man start-up with zero assets to a £2m-turnover company employing 30 full-time members of staff is celebrating its first decade in business.

Purpose Media started life as a web development agency, based in the Mansfield i-Centre, by founding directors Matt Wheatcroft and Tim Lenton, after they left their jobs with a funding organisation when their contracts came to an end.

They were joined on day one by Matt’s wife, Sam and, initially, set about establishing a lifestyle business which would replicate their former salaries. However, as the business grew, it took on bigger projects and more staff, before purchasing its first premises on The Village business park, in South Normanton, in 2012.

In 2015, the firm made the decision to expand its offering from just building websites and ecommerce platforms and move towards being a full-service marketing agency.

Over the next two years, it set about acquiring or recruiting industry experts to its in-house team, so it could offer a range of marketing solutions to its clients, including creative design, digital marketing, video, content and PR. 

Today, Purpose Media employs 30 people and has an annual turnover of circa £2m. It also owns 5,000 sq ft of commercial workspace in South Normanton, following the purchase of the two units adjacent to its existing head office, and operates an office in London.  

Over the years, it has employed 11 apprentices and won multiple business awards. It has worked with hundreds of clients from local SMEs like Whitemeadow Furniture, MX Display and On Event Production Co., to professional sports clubs including Derby County Football Club and Middlesex County Cricket Club, business support organisations like the British Chambers of Commerce, and global firms including True Refrigeration and Pattonair.

“It’s been a fantastic ten years and we wouldn’t have been able to grow the business like we have without the hard work, commitment and dedication of the whole team here at Purpose Media, and to all the amazing businesses big and small that we have worked with over the years.

“The business has changed dramatically in the past ten years. Although ecommerce and website development is still a big part of what we do, our future is as a highly-creative boutique agency that works in collaboration with our clients as an extension to their team, or as a complete outsourced marketing department, to help them achieve more.”
