Stepnell ion running for 'best main contractor to work for' national construction award

Construction specialist Stepnell, which has an office in Nottingham, is in the running for a national Construction Enquirer Best Main Contractor to Work for Award, one of the building industry’s most prestigious accolades awarded to construction companies by construction people.

Stepnell, which also has offices in Rugby, Kidderminster, Wantage, Southampton, Bristol and Poole, is one of 10 contractors which has been nominated by industry peers for the award in both the £50m-£250m and under £250m business turnover categories.

“As part of our commitment to looking after our employees, Stepnell runs a range of development programmes to help people across the business move forward in their careers, and we routinely run ‘listening groups’ to gain feedback and find out what they would like to see improved,” says Tom Wakeford, Stepnell joint managing director. “One of the key themes we’ve been hearing from our employees is that they like working for Stepnell because they feel like we’re still a family-run business with a family atmosphere; where everyone feels part of the team, listened to, consulted and empowered to make decisions and changes.”

The family-owned firm recently invested in Average2Awesome (A2A), a life-changing, professionally coached health, fitness and well-being programme for its employees. A2A, which builds on the concept that a healthy workforce is a happy and productive workforce, challenged staff to take part in a 12-week calorie-restricted diet and exercise programme, incorporating a weekly 10,000-step challenge, to help them get fit and healthy. The scheme has helped change attitudes towards exercise with many Stepnell staff now going out for pre-work runs and lunchtime walks.

“We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for these awards,” says Tom Wakeford. “Our people are at the centre of every company decision we make and it’s great to see that this has been recognised.”

The winners will be announced at the Construction Enquirer Awards ceremony at The Hilton Birmingham Metropole on 9 October.

Stepnell is currently working on a flagship £9.1 million local building project which will provide teaching spaces, a café, library, courtyard and a rooftop terrace for Nottingham Trent University’s Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies.
