J Tomlinson celebrates success in the West Midlands

Building services company J Tomlinson is celebrating success in the West Midlands – two years after opening an office in Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield.

The company has won over £30 million worth of contracts in the region in recent times - ranging from a £7.25 million M&E contract on a 922-bed student accommodation scheme at Paradise Street, Coventry, through to a two-year extension to a facilities management heating and gas servicing contract extension provided to the University of Birmingham.

Other key contracts secured over the past two years include construction of a £7 million supported living scheme in Coventry, £2 million worth of refurbishment work of the MRI and CT scan facility at Dudley Guest Hospital, the refurbishment of two wards at Burton Hospital, plus an award-winning Ground Source Heat Pump scheme delivered on behalf of Wolverhampton-based social landlord, Bromford. The installation, delivered by J Tomlinson’s Repairs and Maintenance division, took home the ‘RHI Installer of the Year’ title at the West Midlands Energy Efficiency and Healthy Homes Awards after helping Bromford residents across two Shropshire sites considerably reduce their energy bills and cut carbon emissions.

J Tomlinson’s regeneration division has also increased its West Midlands portfolio, with clients including Midland Heart, The Riverside Group, and Housing & Care 21 benefitting from the company’s social housing expertise.

Last year, J Tomlinson was appointed on a five-year elemental heating, kitchen and bathroom framework with leading housing provider Housing & Care 21. Due to complete in 2022, the framework has seen J Tomlinson delivering projects across multiple Midlands-based sites specialising in the provision of affordable retirement housing and care services for people aged 65 and above.

The first scheme undertaken by J Tomlinson on behalf of Housing & Care 21 involved the replacement of baths with walk‐in showers within 37 tenanted properties and three communal areas at sheltered housing development Dennis Potter Court, Worcestershire. This £225k project took just over two months to complete and has helped Housing & Care 21 continue to support independent living for older people in line with its vision and values.

Sam Hall, technical surveyor (Central West Shropshire, West Midlands & Worcestershire) at Housing & Care 21, commented:

“Since successfully completing their first allocated project on behalf of Housing & Care 21 last year, which involved the replacement of baths with walk-in showers at one of our sheltered accommodation schemes in Wythall, J Tomlinson continue to deliver works to an exceptionally high standard.

“We have received excellent feedback from scheme managers and residents alike, praising J Tomlinson’s work ethic, compassion and detailed understanding of our industry, and we are very proud of our partnership and its joint achievements to date.”

J Tomlinson’s success in the West Midlands has helped to create many new jobs across the region, including positions for gas engineers and multi-skilled tradespeople, reported the company.

Most recently, the company’s regeneration and commercial refurbishment divisions have completed £4m of refurbishment works across two of the student accommodation blocks at the University of Warwick’s main campus in Coventry. Works commenced in July and were completed in time for the start of the new academic year in accordance with a 10-week fast-track programme, with up to 180 operatives on site on peak days.

Mark Davis, Chief Executive at J Tomlinson, said:

“Since opening our West Midlands office at Canwell, J Tomlinson has strengthened and grown its links with the region. We are delighted to have secured multiple key contracts, including refurbishment and maintenance roles, construction projects and M&E work for a number of high-profile clients such as hospitals and housing groups. I am excited to see where the next two years of our journey takes us.”

J Tomlinson, which was founded in the 1950s, is based in Nottingham and works primarily across the West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire, increased its turnover from £74 million in 2016 to £87 million in 2017. It employs more than 460 people, with an emphasis on direct employment.
