Health & Safety as a career path after you leave the British Forces

Roughly 20,000 people leave the British Forces every year.  With the media reporting on the difficulties that some face in adapting to civilian life, it is no surprise that many are worried. However, according to the MOD, 96% find a job within 6 months. Let’s face it - Health & Safety will always be an issue and the regulations are becoming more stringent every year. Getting the right job in Health and safety is about getting the most relevant qualification for your chosen career path in ‘civvy’ street.

When thinking of leaving the Forces and launching a new career in health and safety there are usually 5 main considerations:

Before you make a decision about your career post Forces, here’s some advice from two people who have been where you are now

RISK Managing Director Mike Adams and lead trainer David Pettit share their experiences of leaving the forces, the challenges an ex-forces person might face, some of the support that’s available and their opinion on the skills that are in demand right now.

It’s easy to overlook just how transferable a lot of the skills you’ve acquired in the forces are. The health and safety profession is very similar to life in the Forces - the capabilities and competencies that you use will be very relevant to many different industries, in particular those roles where management of behaviour is a key skill. Companies that need strong enforcement of health and safety are looking for the personal qualities that ex-forces employees tend to have. Because armed forces leavers are skilled, disciplined, hardworking and have the ability to make a positive contribution to any business. All of that means recruiting ex-military personnel is a cost-effective and immediate way to boost capabilities, efficiency and productivity. Be proud of your time in the military – it will work for you more than against you.

I’ve found a profession in health and safety has made best use of the personal qualities that fit with the military ethos – good leaders, organisational skills, a “can do” attitude, integrity and positivity. It’s one thing to have the skills to do a job but without the right attitude you’ll never be a good fit for the role. Be proud of your military career, because health and safety is an ideal profession for people leaving the armed forces. Because the skills learned while in service are massively transferable and can be put into practice in any industry. Gaining a certified qualification in health and safety validates your experience and shows potential employers that you have the practical skills and academic aptitude needed to pass the certification exam. My story when leaving the RAF is not uncommon to leaving any of the armed forces, I didn’t originally think of health and safety as a career – it was my third option. However, it’s proved to be a very rewarding career and I can say Ex-Military personnel, are highly sought-after within any safety critical environment – but especially construction.

What’s the best way to go after job opportunities in health and safety post military?

Health and safety is generally a good area to look for job opportunities when leaving the military. Depending on your length of service and experience you could look at different levels, specialisms and pay rates. The most common questions RISK get asked by those leaving the military and seeking to retrain with ELCAS funding support, include: ‘What is the best health and safety qualification?’ and ‘What skills are required for a health and safety job?’ The answer is always, it depends on you. The qualifications you choose to undertake will depend on your current situation and experience.
