Inspiring Business by Sharing Success

Leicestershire’s Largest Career’s Speed Networking Event Returns

More than 300 students from 20 schools and colleges are set to take part in the county’s largest career’s speed networking event.

The event, run by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) and now in its third year, will be held at Leicester Racecourse, on Friday 9 November.

Over 150 employers are taking part in this year’s event, which gives the students an opportunity to ‘speed network’ in-order-to learn more about the local labour market and future job opportunities available to them.

The event, which is part of Leicester Business Festival, works by giving small groups of students a 6 minute window to ask each employer a series of questions, before they move on to the next business representative.

This format gives the students the opportunity to speak to a wide-variety of local employers – from small traders to large corporations, covering a number of sectors from construction to retail, and services to manufacturing.

This year’s event is being sponsored by Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which manufactures and supplies quality generic and branded medicines to UK hospitals and pharmacies, as well as essential supplies to aid agencies.

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Morningside’s Chief Executive and LLEP Board member, said:

“Nurturing the potential of the county’s future workforce is very important to us, which is why we have decided to support the event in a big way this year.

“As a business we have grown rapidly and need a highly skilled, well trained and professional workforce to continue to be successful. We recently launched our own apprenticeships programme with Loughborough College and have discovered first-hand the benefits of employing and developing young people.

“I hope the students gain some valuable insights into the world of work from the event, as it’s their drive and ambition which will help shape the future prosperity and success of Leicestershire’s businesses.”

Following last year’s event the students who attended were surveyed, with 94% saying they felt more aware of their career choices, as a result of taking part.

To ensure the students gain a wide-range of feedback, the LLEP is calling on other local businesses to get involved. Those participating will be required to talk about their career, give industry insights and employability ‘top tips’.

Kevin Harris, LLEP Chair, said:

“I’m really looking forward to this event as it is a fantastic way for young people to explore the array of career opportunities across the wide range of key sectors in Leicester and Leicestershire.

“Over the past 3 years we have been improving engagement between schools and businesses with our Enterprise Adviser Network and now have 60 schools and 60 senior business volunteers working to raise student aspirations and develop employability skills.

“Last year employers from a whole host of different businesses and public sector organisations such as Mattioli Woods, RSM UK, McDonald’s, Santander, NHS, Boots PLC, East Midlands Airport and the Armed Forces attended the event alongside lots of other local businesses.

“This year we want to see the same commitments, so that students can hear from as many employers as possible, and expand on their labour market knowledge.”
