Derby optometrists celebrates 40 years in business

When Davina Dosanjh started working for a Derby optical practice at the age of 18 – she never dreamed she would buy the business!

But that’s exactly what happened and now Richard Petrie Optometrists on Burton Road, Littleover is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

“I’m so proud of what Richard and I have achieved at the Littleover practice,” said Davina, who has been a fully-trained optometrist for more than a decade.

“We worked together for a long time before I took over from Richard and I can say it has been an absolute pleasure.

“I feel very honoured to be able to take the practice forward, considering the history I have with the business.

“It is such a wonderful job and our clients are very loyal and supportive.”

To mark the 40th anniversary of the practice, 35-year-old Davina treated customers to an exclusive shopping event. She invited clients to enjoy a week-long sale in the shop, which offered discounts of up to 40 per cent.

“We also had cake,” laughed Davina, who lives in Derby.

“I couldn’t do what I do without everyone’s help. We are a very strong team and that’s why we continue to thrive as an independent shop.

“We have built up a huge client base and we feel very valued within the Littleover community.

“The team are passionate about the service we provide and that is vital when there is such fierce competition around.”

Richard Petrie launched his business in 1978 and later, employed Davina as his part-time Saturday girl. She juggled studying at university to become an optometrist and working with Richard at the practice.

In 2007, Davina joined the team as a full-time optometrist. Davina said:

“I absolutely loved it. It was the perfect partnership.

“Then Richard and I started to talk about how to take the business forward.

“Obviously I wanted to move my career on and Richard was keen to put his retirement plans in place.

“It was great to work with Richard for so long before he retired. We are still friends. In fact, I used to call him my work dad - that’s how close we were.

“He taught me so much and I’m proud to see his name outside the shop. Long may the business continue and grow.”

Retired optometrist, Richard Petrie, said:

“It was a very exciting time when I opened the practice in Littleover in 1978.

“I had been hunting all over Derby to find the right place to run a business. One night, I was driving home and I saw the empty shop in Littleover. I went to see it and it was everything I had been looking for.

“I fitted out the place myself and my two children, who were four and six at the time, helped me lay the carpet.

“It was a real labour of love and when Davina started working for me, I was thrilled to find someone who was as passionate about the business as me.

“I could not have been happier to pass the shop on to Davina.

“I am delighted that the business celebrates its 40th year this year. It truly is a milestone and I wish Davina and the team all the very best in moving forward.”
