3T Logistics becomes safety champion to reduce road fatalities

Europe’s largest independent 4PL has been appointed a champion of the Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) standard as part of a commitment to reducing fatalities caused by construction vehicles.
From their Leicester base in Enderby, 3T Logistics manage hundreds of HGV and construction deliveries every day. By becoming a CLOCS champion, the company aims to increase awareness of the CLOCS standard within their own business as well as amongst the carriers they use and their clients in the construction industry. These include Recticel and British Gypsum who are already CLOCS champions themselves.
An estimated 500 pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured by HGVs every year in the UK, while 55 per cent of cyclist fatalities in London between 2008 and 2013 involved a heavy goods vehicle, including a disproportionate number of construction vehicles.
CLOCS brings the construction logistics industry together to ensure a road safety culture is embedded across the industry. The scheme came about after Transport for London commissioned an independent review of the construction sector’s transport activities in 2012 to look at why these accidents occurred and how they could be prevented.
The resulting CLOCS report identified issues such as the fact that blind spots on construction vehicles were often larger than general haulage vehicles and that on-site road safety was not considered in same way as health and safety. The report also noted the lack of a common industry standard to manage work-related road safety.
“As a 4PL provider to large construction companies, it is important for us to consider the safety aspects of the construction sector they operate within as well as adding value,” says 3T’s MD Tim Fawkes. “Construction logistics is quite rightly becoming increasingly focused on health and safety as well as carrier compliance to ensure that delivery practices are safe and environmentally sound. We’re delighted to be taking this positive step.”
The CLOCS standard is made up of eleven separate standards, codes of practice and policies including blind-spot minimisation and manoeuvring warnings. The standard enables the management of road safety in a way that can be adhered to in a consistent way.
The scheme was recently supported by RoadPeace who came forward to rally for more construction companies to join. There are almost 300,000 construction companies working within the UK in 2018 but currently there are only around 600 CLOCS champions.
“Protecting those who share the roads with construction vehicles is paramount to our work. As a CLOCS communicator, we aim to engage with the construction industry, to promote good practice and ensure that having a robust road safety culture is a common standard,” adds Tim.
3T work with large construction companies to streamline and improve their supply chain processes. By acting as a communicator for companies in the construction industry, 3T Logistics can incorporate a CLOCS standard approach into various supply chains. Their commitment to the programme began at the start of 2018 when they put in place a Silver FORS network for their largest construction industry client, British Gypsum.
