Developers’ saddles soar to £1m heights for charity

Two intrepid cyclists from the Midlands have helped a Rugby World Cup winner to raise more than £1 million for underprivileged teenagers.

Scott Davidson and Damian Middleton, of property developers Henry Davidson Developments (HDD) which has offices in Nottingham, have cycled across Europe alongside England rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio as part of the Dallaglio RugbyWorks Cycle Slam.

The event took World Cup winner Dallaglio on an energy-sapping 1,800km journey through the French and Swiss Alps, Italian lakes and stunning scenery of Slovenia and Croatia, alongside almost 200 supporters and celebrities including former rugby star Austin Healey, actor John Hannah and Andrew Ridgeley of Wham!

An epic three-week cycling challenge, the Dallaglio Cycle Slam raises funds for RugbyWorks, a programme that uses rugby to engage troubled teenagers who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education.

Scott, HDD managing director, and associate director Damian, battled saddle sore and searing temperatures on a grueling 566km leg from the city of Udine in Italy, to Split in Croatia. Their journey took five days to complete.

Scott said:

“We’re very proud to have joined Lawrence and his team again on this fantastic event to support RugbyWorks. It was my fourth time at the Dallaglio Slam and Damian’s second, but it never seems to get any easier!

“Lawrence is a fantastic guy whose dedication and sense of teamwork inspires people on and off the road. We’ve raised more than £6,000 for the charity, which will help two young people to complete the RugbyWorks programme and have a chance of a much better future.”

Established in 2009 by the former England rugby union captain, the Dallaglio Cycle Slam is split into three stages of five days’ cycling. Up to 30 core riders complete the whole three-week challenge alongside Lawrence.

The event raises funds for RugbyWorks, a sports-based motivational and personal development programme that uses rugby to transform the aspirations of teenagers at increased risk of long-term unemployment, criminality and imprisonment.

HDD is an experienced property developer specialising in retail-led mixed-use developments with expertise in the creation of local and district centre developments.

The ambitious business has expanded its operations with offices in Nottingham and Birmingham city centre.
