Charity football match nets almost £3,000 for new grassroots football club

A charity football match at Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium raised almost £3,000 for a new grassroots football club.

Purpose Media organised the game to raise funds for Sleetmoor United, which was established earlier this year following a merger between ADASC FC, Leabrooks Juniors FC Rangers and GFC Alfreton Town Girls and Ladies.

The new club is currently working with a range of funding partners including the Football Foundation, the FA, local authorities and a wide range of third parties from business and the community, to raise the £2m needed to create a state-of-the-arts community facility at its home ground near Alfreton.

It has already secured funding pledges of £1m, which will be invested in revamping the existing facilities at Sleetmoor Lane Sports Ground, including a floodlit, all-weather (3G) pitch, modern clubhouse and changing facilities, better drainage and grass playing surfaces on the remaining six pitches, and improved site security and car parking.

As part of the event, young players from Sleetmoor’s junior teams were given a stadium tour before playing in a series of games against each other. They got full use of home and away dressing rooms, use of the DCFC pitch including goals and home and away dugouts, to give them the chance to feel like a professional footballer.

Then, a Purpose Media XI took on a team of Sleetmoor United parents in a friendly match, which Sleetmoor United won 3-1.

All the adult players paid to play, while spectators were charged £5 on the gate and there was a collection on the night, all of which raised £2,760 for the club.

Purpose Media’s Managing Director Matt Wheatcroft, who is also chairman of Sleetmoor United, said:

“Supporting grassroots football is a real passion of mine and it’s great to be in the position to be able to help a local club which has touched the lives of thousands of families over the years.

“Sleetmoor United has ambitions plans to build something that the community will benefit from for years to come. It was great to be able to hold this event to raise funds as we work towards bringing those plans to fruition.

“Purpose Media is a proud and longstanding partner of Derby County FC and we are extremely grateful to our good friends at the Rams for helping to organise the event and letting us take over the stadium for an evening to give local youngsters the chance to experience what’s it’s like to play for a professional club.

“It was also a great way to thank our staff for all their efforts in helping to drive Purpose Media’s success, and also to the parents of the youngsters at Sleetmoor their commitment, passion and support of the club.”
