Russell Scanlan Backs International Museum Day 2018

Nottingham-based insurance brokers Russell Scanlan offer specialist and tailored insurance policies to museums and, as part of International Museum Day 2018, the team is drawing attention to the importance of supporting the organisations which protect and celebrate heritage today and for generations to come. Russell Scanlan Director Simon Winiarski looks at how museums are evolving.

“International Museum Day 2018 takes place today, this year with the theme ‘Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics.’ The aim of the global initiative is to draw attention to how museums are evolving in a digital culture, in which we use multiple forms of communication.

In a digital age, museums are attracting new audiences by approaching their collections in new ways – through the digitalisation of displays, adding multimedia elements to exhibitions and by having a presence on social media. International Museum Day 2018 is all about celebrating these developments and supporting your local museums as they adapt to survive in the modern age.

At Russell Scanlan, we understand that museums are very special places for those involved with the maintenance, preservation and sustainability of the attractions. In partnership with the East Midlands Museum Service (EMMS) we have created a unique, market-leading insurance policy for independent museums in the East Midlands and we tailor our policies to meet individual museum’s needs.

For example, we offer a personal no obligation visit to museums to understand its needs as a matter of course, very competitive premiums and options to protect business incomes and not simply collections. We arrange cover provided by excellent insurers and also offer access to a specialist legal helpline. Our ethos is that each exhibition is unique, and so the insurance policy should be tailored to its requirements. With an extensive knowledge of the heritage sector, we work very closely with specialist teams to ensure each museum we work for is in safe hands.

In 2017 International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 36,000 museums hosting events in 157 countries across the globe. Some of our favourite local museums include Nottingham Industrial Museum, the National Justice Museum and the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre – we’d recommend a visit to any of these this month in support of the international initiative!”
