Sunshine, smiles and Spitfires at this year's Notts County Show

SUNSHINE and smiles filled Newark Showground last weekend for the 135th Nottinghamshire County Show.
Heavy horses, record livestock entries and world-class show jumping were just a few of the highlights over the weekend which delighted the 16,000-strong attendees at the popular family event on 12 and 13 May.
The prestigious county show saw a range of exciting attractions and displays in the Main Ring on both days, including adrenaline racing stunts performed by Atkinson Action Horses, Lawnmower Racing hosted by Nottinghamshire Young Farmers Club and Derek Tindall’s magnificent birds of prey display.
Visitors were also delighted by an RAF special flyover on both days of the Show. Engines roared as the crowd looked to the sky to see a Hurricane fly over the Showground on Saturday lunch time, followed by a Mark IX Spitfire on Sunday.
George Taylor, show manager for the Nottinghamshire County Show, said:
“This year’s Show has been absolutely brilliant, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather! It’s been great to see so many families enjoying themselves and having fun, which is what it is all about.
“We focus heavily on making sure that there is something that everyone will enjoy – if you are six or sixty – we want to make it a day to remember!”
Una-Marie Palin, show administration manager, added:
“In order to ensure that animals and agriculture remain at the heart of the show, we changed the layout of our livestock this year, meaning that farm animals were on display at every entrance to the Showground. Visitors were able to view and interact with a range of animals at several sites and we received a collection of positive feedback from the changes, which we are extremely pleased about.
“We want to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in making this year’s show such a big success, including the whole Showground team, exhibitors, visitors, volunteers, supporters and sponsors – it would not be possible without everyone’s input!”
This year saw a host of demonstrations from food producers and industry experts in the Food Experience Area, showing off their skills to make healthy vegetable-based dishes and teaching children how to make soup and mini burgers.
Youngsters were seen queuing up to meet Froojamaflip - an 8ft stilted character, made up of 25 different fruit and vegetables – as he strolled around the Food Experience and Countryside areas with his gardening companion Fred who engaged with children on the importance of healthy eating.
Rory Dennis, visitor to the show on Sunday, said:
“We’ve had so much fun at the Show, there is such a variety of things to see and do, we didn’t know where to start! As we have a two-year-old boy, the tractors were the highlight as well as the animals, the Sheep Show and the giant tortoises!
“The Food Experience area was really interesting too and we even came away with a bag full of fresh fruit and veg! This was our first year at the Show and I’m sure we’ll be coming back next year.”
More than 140 local producers, traders, and food specialists attended the Show ranging from gin to chocolate, to handmade crafts, art work and floral displays.
The Show saw a record number of livestock entries, including 163 pig entries, 374 sheep entries and 212 goat entries.
