Renovation of mental health centre complete

Lincoln-based construction firm Gelder Group has completed works to Langworth Ward, one of two wards within Witham Court in North Hykeham.

Run by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT), Witham Court is accommodation for patients with mental health issues and consists of Brant Ward and Langworth Ward; a 17-bed treatment and assessment unit for people with special and complex needs associated with dementia.

LPFT appointed Gelder Group to undertake the necessary works to update and modernise the ward’s facilities. The works included a full refurbishment and expansion to the kitchen area, including the removal of a toilet facility, and the addition of a new toilet facility in another room.

During works, some of the residents painted the timber hoarding which was in place on the inside of the building. Scenes of Lincoln Cathedral, rolling hills, the Red Arrows and a ‘tree of life’ featuring hand prints for leaves were painted.

Nick Overton, head of capital projects and compliance for the estates and facilities department at LPFT, said:

“With the kitchen area becoming congested and dated, it needed a refurbishment and expansion to be able to cope with the requirements placed on the ward.

“Since Langworth Ward caters for older adults with special needs, we wanted to make sure the construction process was as least disruptive as possible for the residents, so it was a pleasure to see them paint the hoarding to make the room feel homelier during the construction works.

“These works are further improvements the NHS continues to make in order to keep providing excellent care.”

Michael Sheppard, contracts manager at Gelder Group, said:

“Gelder Group has a lot of experience working with hospitals and healthcare facilities, and it has been a rewarding experience delivering the new facilities for LPFT, especially since the residents were able to use the hoarding for creative purposes.”

Multi-award-winning Gelder Group, which recently announced the launch of its Vision 2020 to continue its mission of improving the business and helping the community, delivers projects across a range of sectors including education, health, retail, insurance, leisure, heritage and residential.
