Notts development hoping to score triple award win

NOTTINGHAM’S BioCity Discovery Building has been shortlisted for three top property awards which recognise outstanding developments across the East Midlands.

The iconic £30m, 6,830 sqm building is nominated in the Commercial, Design through Innovation and Regeneration categories at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) East Midlands awards, which take place in Nottingham in May.

Leading property, construction and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard delivered building surveying services and NEC supervision, Willmott Dixon acted as the main contractor and CPMG was lead architect. Gleeds was the project and cost manager, all working closely with the client, Nottingham City Council.

David Harris, national director at Pick Everard said:

“We’re delighted that BioCity has been nominated for this prestigious award.

“The work was procured through the Scape National Project Management and Quantity Surveying framework - which has been superseded by the Built Environment Consultancy Services - and we worked closely with a number of different partners – the majority of whom are based in Nottingham. This has really helped fly the flag for the city and its construction and creative industries.

“Nottingham City Council and D2N2’s substantial investment in this flagship project is a further demonstration of its on-going commitment to inner-city development. It really is one of the top five projects in the city, having gained national and international recognition.

“The mixed-use nature of the building – ranging from laboratories and office space, to café facilities and chemical and solvent storage rooms – means that this project required careful attention to detail, strong leadership and the dedication of our NEC supervisor team to deliver a defect free handover. This met all of our agreed project programme and budgetary constraints.”

David Reid, operations manager at Willmott Dixon said:

“We are proud to have be part of this award-winning scheme; we do a lot in Nottingham and it is great to work collaboratively with the council and local supply chain partners to deliver outstanding schemes such as this.

“We have strong relationships within the city and we are certain the BioCity Discovery Building will continue to be central to the city’s regeneration and development.”

Nottingham is one of six science cities in the UK, alongside Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and York charged with creating economic growth by creating better and deeper links between business, science, technology and innovation sectors. The construction of the Discovery building ensured over 300 jobs were not only retained in the city, but created through the building’s development and construction and Sygnature’s expansion, transforming a brownfield site into a state of the art, landmark building for the city.

The RICS Awards are the premier property and construction awards in the country, honouring the most innovative projects in the region and their impact on local communities.
