Jayne Torvill and Johnny Nelson among guests at exclusive charity event

NOTTINGHAM’S own world champion Jayne Torvill will be amongst the guests at ‘An Evening with Roy Jones Jr’, a fundraising dinner in aid of one of the city’s biggest charities.

Torvill will be joined at the event by other sporting stars including Sky Sports’ boxing expert Johnny Nelson, all in aid of the Nottingham School of Boxing.

Held on 26 May at the Nottingham Belfry, the event will see Roy Jones Jr, a former six-weight world champion tell stories of the legendary in-ring successes which have contributed to the American fighter being regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all-time. The evening will be hosted by award-winning comedian Charlie Hale.

Proceeds from the evening will go towards funding the school, which was founded by BBC Sports Unsung Hero Marcellus Baz BEM and was set up to help young people across the city build confidence, tolerance and self-esteem, helping them out of a cycle of offending and reoffending.

Baz said: “Jayne has been a long-time supporter of the work of Nottingham School of Boxing and Switch Up and we’re delighted to welcome her to the event. ’An Evening with Roy Jones Jr’ promises to be a unique event which will give those attending the chance to hear first-hand about some of Roy’s biggest and most memorable fights – all while raising funds for a project which is providing a vital outlet for the young people of Nottingham.

“All attendees will get a top-class three course meal with their ticket and those opting for the Gold or Silver package will get a photo with Roy, which is a chance not to be missed.”

Michael Lawless, who is jointly promoting the event on behalf of the Marcellus Baz Group, Midas Events and Goldstar Promotions, said:

“We’re delighted to bring Roy Jones Jr to Nottingham with the support of Goldstar Promotions for this fantastic event, giving us an opportunity which promises to raise a lot of money for a worthy cause.”

Michael added:

“The work Baz and his team do in Nottingham is nothing short of incredible, and this event is a great opportunity for people to hear from a boxing legend while supporting a great charity in the process.”

Tickets for the event are available at £99 from tinyurl.com/AnEveningWithRoyJonesJr, with all proceeds going to the Nottingham School of Boxing.  For more information on ticketing, please contact Tom Snee on 0115 853 2110.
