South Wigston students get Money Matters

Teenagers at South Wigston College have got to grips with finances during two days of a Hinckley & Rugby Building Society sponsored event by Citizens Advice Leicestershire to prevent the devastating impact of debt.

Nine young people aged from 17 to 19 took part in the Money Matters project, which was first piloted at Redmoor Academy in Hinckley last year. The feedback from young people has been so positive that the initiative is being rolled out to more schools in Leicestershire.

Money Matters covers the skills needed to make good financial decisions and topics include credit cards, mortgages, tax and interest. As well as sponsoring the event at South Wigston College, Hinckley & Rugby sent branch office managers Marie Yates and Tracey Phipps along to deliver a session on saving and achieving financial balance.

South Wigston branch office manager Marie said:

“We hope the youngsters enjoyed the lessons and learnt some useful money matters skills.”

Comments from the young people included:

“I am so pleased I now know the concept of budgeting”, “I did not think this would be fun, but it really was” and “When we get out there on our own, it will help us to become independent.”

Margaret Brough, Diversity Hub Trainer at Citizens Advice Leicestershire, said:

“The programme is an early intervention model that takes a holistic approach to money matters.

“The programme will help build confidence and increase self-esteem so that young people believe they can make a difference for themselves and others in their communities. Our thanks go to Hinckley & Rugby Building Society for its support.”

Money Matters is next being delivered at Heath Lane Academy in Earl Shilton and at Stephenson Studio School in Coalville with funding from Leicestershire County Council's SHIRE Community Grant.
