TEENAGE FENCER RECEIVES SUPPORT AT SPORTSAID CHARITY LUNCH

UP-AND-COMING teenage fencer Owen Jordan was awarded a £500 cheque at a charity lunch to raise money for SportsAid – which helps to support the next generation of British sports stars.

The 19-year-old, from Nottinghamshire, is currently ranked sixth in the U20 world rankings and recently won the Leon Paul U20 GBR qualifier, the Senior Men’s Elite competition and the Welsh Fencing Open.

Owen was presented with the cheque at the SportsAid Lunch, which took place at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground on Friday, 16 March.

Nottinghamshire business professionals also raised £725 for the national charity at the event – sponsored by Nelsons Solicitors, Yorkshire Bank, Musson Liggins and Trent Bridge Cricket Ground.

The money will go towards providing financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential.

Tim Lawler, chief executive for SportsAid, said:

“The support businesses in Nottingham provide for local athletes through their fundraising activity is brilliant. The financial award from SportsAid not only helps young sports stars with their training and competition costs, but also gives them a motivational boost as they feel their potential is being recognised.”

Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons Solicitors, added:

“SportsAid is a fantastic charity, which helps athletes progress in their chosen sport and we are very pleased that we are able to help make their dreams become a reality.”

The lunches are held three times annually and the sponsors choose an athlete to present with a £500 donation. Previous recipients of SportsAid support have included Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.
