Purpose Media director set to inspire primary school children on International Women's Day

A director from full-service marketing agency Purpose Media is using International Women's Day 2018 as a platform to inspire local primary school children to take an interest in a career in technology and marketing.

Katrina Starkie, who is Marketing Director at the Derbyshire-based firm, is giving a talk to children from the Bramble Academy, in Mansfield Woodhouse, about the opportunities available from a career in two sectors currently dominated by men.

The event has been organised by the Evolve Trust to mark International Women's Day, on 8 March.

Katrina will be taking along some concrete, a fire extinguisher, some ice and some fabric – to represent four of the clients she works with at Purpose Media – and will be tasking the children to come up with a marketing messages for each company.

Representatives from local construction company Wildgoose and the Chad newspaper will also be giving presentations on the day.

Katrina, an ex-pupil of the school, said:

"It's great to be going back to the classroom to talk to the next generation of recruits.

"The speakers are all from traditionally male-dominated industries and that's partly due to fewer girls being empowered at an early age to choose training in these areas. This event will help to address that.

"One of the big problems is that young people are not being engaged early enough, so by the time they leave school, they're either not interested or don't have the skills or qualifications to take their education further and start their marketing or technology careers.

"The aim of this event is to get primary school children inspired by showing them the sorts of opportunities that are available and what they need to do to get there."
