Lubrizol’s fundraisers work hard to keep mental health in Mind

Staff at a Derbyshire company have been praised for a remarkable year of fundraising after handing over thousands of pounds to a local mental health charity.

Employees at chemical company Lubrizol, based in Hazelwood, near Belper, have collected a total of £6,665 for Derbyshire Mind by organising and supporting a series of activities over the past 12 months.

Lubrizol has agreed to support the charity for two years and its staff wasted no time to get into fundraising action when the partnership was launched 12 months ago.

Since last January, they have undertaken sponsored quizzes, running events, a Christmas jumper day, a Wimbledon sweepstake, collection in the canteen, an Easter egg hunt and their own Movember event.

One couple who work at the company even brought in eggs laid by their pet chickens and sold them for £1 per half dozen, while Lubrizol also supported Derby running club the Shelton Striders’ Brooksie’s Bash event in July, which was accompanied by a successful Gnome Roam treasure hunt event for children.

More activities are already planned for 2018, with the company determined to beat the total and bring its association with Derbyshire Mind to a successful conclusion in 12 months’ time.

Simon Griffiths, general manager of Lubrizol Hazelwood, said: “Our staff have proven to be extremely prolific fundraisers over the past few years and they excelled themselves once again by collecting such a remarkable total in 2017.

“We all know somebody who has been affected by stress and anxiety and know how debilitating mental health issues can be, both for their home-life and life at work.

“Derbyshire Mind’s work has the potential to change lives and I am very proud that we have raised so much money to enable their services to continue and grow.”

Derbyshire Mind, which is affiliated to the national Mind organisation, supports local people through a series of services, including specialist advocacy services and its Enjoying Derby Project, and also offers mental health awareness training.

Sinead Dalton, corporate administrator for Derbyshire Mind, said: “We are hugely grateful to everybody at Lubrizol for such a wonderful year of fundraising. Even though we are affiliated to National Mind, we are a small charity and have to raise all of our funding locally.

“This funding will enable us to make significant steps forward with our Enjoying Derbyshire project, which currently encourages people with mental ill health to meet up for walks, reduce isolation and helps to raise their self-esteem.

“Our aim is to expand this so that we can develop a wellbeing programme of different activities across the county of Derbyshire.”
