Lubrizol consultant Olenka picks up prestigious pension prize

A Derbyshire firm’s pensions manager has picked up a prestigious industry award after carrying out a host of improvements to its company pension scheme.

Olenka Kaczmarczyk, who is the pensions and benefits consultant at Lubrizol in Hazelwood, near Belper, walked away with the plaudits after she was crowned DC Scheme Manager of the Year at the Pensions Insight magazine awards last month.

Lubrizol operates a generous scheme but Olenka, who joined the company last year, has since made a host of further improvements, including introducing a DC Pensions Escalator, which automatically steps employee pension contributions up a little each year until they benefit from the maximum Lubrizol contribution.

She also worked with the company’s global communications team to spread the word about the company pension scheme in order to encourage more colleagues to sign up and also increase their contributions.

Through her efforts, the scheme has received a marked increase in applicants deciding to make a higher contribution to their pensions.

Olenka was handed her prize by Rita Butler-Jones, head of DC sales at Legal and General Investment Management, after award judges praised her success, which also included “achieving the Pension Quality Mark Plus award, introducing pensions salary exchange and carrying out a full review of the default investment strategy.”

Olenka said: “We entered for a number of scheme awards, including DC scheme of the year award and they encouraged me to put my name forward too. I didn’t expect to win so I didn’t believe it when they read my name out. We were also finalists in each of the scheme categories we entered.

“I worked in consultancy before I joined Lubrizol and the scheme is certainly as good as schemes offered by the biggest companies in the UK. We understand that people have to make choices about how to spend their income but making provision for their retirement is so important.

“Lubrizol has a history of looking after its employees and part of that is helping them to retire when they choose, so encouraging them to benefit from a high quality pension scheme is extremely important right from their first day of employment.

“Nobody wants to have to work for longer than they can or they want to, so helping our employees to make appropriate retirement provision is extremely important to us.”
