Swannington eco-building project gets the support of Ibstock Brick and Forticrete

An environmental school building project in North West Leicestershire has been given a boost by a major local brick manufacturer.
Earlier this year, Swannington Primary School started construction of its new SPACE (Swannington Primary and Community Expansion) building.
And in the latest stage of work, the UK’s largest brick manufacturer Ibstock has donated 10,000 Leicester Multi Red Stock bricks manufactured at its Ellistown factory – just over three miles away, as well as supplying roof tiles for the building from its Forticrete brand. The products were chosen to fit in with both the eco and sustainable themes of the building and the surrounding area.
Simon Rogers, Head of Marketing at Ibstock, says: “We’re delighted to be involved in the construction of the new school and community building at Swannington Primary School. It will be a real asset to everybody who lives in the surrounding area. As a local manufacturing company when we were approached to be involved we didn’t hesitate in offering our support and we look forward to seeing the school children and other community groups benefitting from the additional space it creates.”
Working in Partnership with Eco Builds and Renewables Ltd, the project is using innovative building construction technology and renewable energy to make the building highly efficient, with the new facility set to become the most sustainable new school building in Leicestershire.
The new building, which will provide accommodation for the growing number of pupils at the school and an additional community facility for local people, was granted planning permission in March, with work starting on the project in May. It is expected to be opened in early 2018.
Funding for the building has been achieved without government or local authority support, and to date £120,000 has been raised through a number of grants and fundraising activities.
Project Manager John Bridges commented: “Throughout construction we were keen to create partnerships with local suppliers and Ibstock was an obvious choice. The bricks and tiles were carefully chosen so they fitted in with the eco-theme of the building but also complemented the surrounding area. Ibstock ticked all the boxes and we are glad to be working with them and have their support in creating a space the whole community will be able to use.”
Swannington Primary School Headteacher Andy Mawdsley adds: “The donation received from Ibstock has been gratefully received. The school children have been keeping a close eye on the building’s construction to monitor the progress being made and they are all excited to be able to use it from next year.”
