NOTTINGHAM BUSINESSES RAISE ALMOST £700 AT SPORTSAID CHARITY LUNCH

A FUNDRAISING lunch for Nottingham SportsAid raised £680 to help support the next generation of British sporting stars – including local teenage triathlete Nixie Turner.

The event – sponsored by Nelsons Solicitors, Yorkshire Bank and Trent Bridge Cricket Ground – was held at Trent Bridge on Friday, 20 October.

Nottinghamshire business professionals generously donated to the national charity, which provides financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential.

The lunches are held three times annually and the sponsors choose an athlete to present with a £500 donation.

Nixie, from Nottingham, was awarded the cheque. The 19-year-old moved to the city from Worcester in August 2016 in order to train to a higher level in running, cycling and swimming. She recently placed sixth at the British U20s Festival in the world championship qualifier and third at the Blenheim Palace Triathlon.

Tim Lawler, chief executive for SportsAid, said: “The Nottingham Lunch Club is a brilliant platform for businesses in the city to show their support for young local athletes. The financial barrier is a real hurdle for up-and-coming sports stars and their families, and generous donations, such as the one Nixie has received, make a big difference.”

Gordon Burton – performance director to the UK equestrian world class programme – spoke at the event. Mr Burton, who has worked as an advisor across many world class programmes and has taken secondments with Team GB for both the London and Rio Olympic Games, spoke about his experiences during his successful career.

Previous recipients of SportsAid support have included Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.
