Inspiring Business by Sharing Success

Pupils from Sketchley Hill Primary School in Burbage will be joining thousands of children across the UK to take part in a walk to school week during International Walk to School Month, with help from local homebuilder David Wilson Homes East Midlands.

The school has teamed up with the developer, which has supported the campaign by donating 30 hi-visibility vests and bag tags for pupils to wear on their way to and from school during their Walk to School weeks throughout the rest of the year.

Despite the average distance to a pupil’s primary school being one mile, more than half of school children do not walk to school regularly, with an enormous 52 per cent driven to school in cars or by other means (National Travel Survey 2016).

Jason Cader, Deputy Headteacher at Sketchley Hill Primary School, said: “We encourage our children and their families to walk to school as often as possible. We are grateful for the donation from David Wilson Homes East Midlands as we will be able to use these hi-visibility vests and bag tags on a regular basis not only during walk to school weeks but on school trips as well.”

Walking to school benefits children and their parents by increasing exercise and saving money on fuel, and it can even increase social interaction with other families who choose to walk to school and prevent stress by not driving during the rush hour.

John Reddington, Managing Director for David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “Our development The Spinney is located near to Sketchley Hill Primary School, so as families move into their new homes it is important for us to support International Walk to School Month and encourage families to stay safe while walking to and from school.

“By offering pupils a helping hand and donating hi-visibility vests and bag tags they should be encouraged to walk to school and can stay safe as the dark nights draw in.”

David Wilson is currently building new homes at its development The Spinney in Burbage, near the school.
