Derby stonework company Blanc de Bierges has completed its latest project of building a large open plaza next to the British Airways i360 tower in Brighton.

The British Airways i360 is the world’s tallest moving observation tower. The glass viewing pod rises 450ft into the sky to breath-taking 360 degree views for up to 26 miles.

Chris McBride, director of Blanc de Bierges, based on Colyear Street, said: “Due to the nature of the project and the high expected footfall 80mm thick units with the signature Blanc de Bierges striated texture were selected for their durability and strength.

“We were thrilled and honoured to be part of this project which allowed our experienced team to create a truly beautiful space whilst further establishing our name within the industry both in the UK and internationally.”

Blanc de Bierges also supplied a number of specially crafted units to fill the area around the electrical feeder pillars on the paved area in order for them to fit seamlessly into the area without the need for a change in material.

The company also installed individual steps to achieve the change of level at the promenade edge. It worked with Hampshire based Terra Firma Landscape architects to ensure all of its units fully met the design requirements.

Fiona Atkinson, the lead designer on the project, said: "Since starting work on the first phase of the Regeneration of Brighton Seafront project in 1993, when I first specified Blanc de Bierges, I have been a huge fan and have continued to use it on all phases since. I particularly like its stylish simplicity, which together with its unique versatility provides designers with huge creative opportunities.

“Chris and his team were extremely useful during the design process and readily provided answers to queries plus suggestions, recommendations and samples. Blanc de Bierges have consistently been very helpful and I had no hesitation in using them again for this phase.”

Blanc de Bierges has been going strong for 40 years. It all began when a husband and wife team entered a competition to redesign the centre of their town, Bierges in Belgium which they won. Since then the Blanc de Bierges brand name has been synonymous with the highest standards in cast stonework. Its products have been used across the world from, from the British embassy in Doha, Qatar, to Georgian farmhouses in the English countryside.
