Hard Work is Recipe for Award Success at Hucknall Care Home

Staff at Hazelgrove Care Home in Hucknall have won awards for their hard work and dedication.

Milford Care, which owns five care homes in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, invited staff, visiting professionals, residents and their families to vote in the Milford Care Awards.

An impressive 430 entries were received across eight categories. At Hazelgrove there were three award winners: the support services award went to Mel Hickman, Dementia Champion went to Jade Wardle and the Catering award was won by Karren Chertion.

Karren, 53, was delighted with her win. She said:

"I have worked as a cook at Hazelgrove for five and a half years and love my job, it's very interesting. I wasn't expecting to win and I was very honoured to be nominated, especially as residents and relatives are involved in the process.  My family were also very pleased and said I deserve it."

Karren has worked in care home catering for 15 years and has cooked in all of Milford Care's homes, which include Spencer Grove in Belper,The Meadows in Alfreton and Milford House. Two years ago she was nominated and reached the top five in the catering category of the GreatEast Midlands Care Home Awards. She hopes more award wins will come her way in the future.

 She added:

"It's good for me and good for the home as well. It's a great team here."

The award nominations took place over three weeks with ballot boxes at each care home. A shortlist of finalists was drawn up with one finalist per category per care home. The 40 finalists were interviewed by a peer panel of ambassadors from each home.

After careful consideration and scoring, there was one winner selected per category, who had their names announced at a glittering awards night.

Sam Palmer, HR Manager at Milford Care, said:

"We were delighted by the huge number of nominations we received, particularly from residents and their families.

These awards are about giving residents a voice to thank and recognise the staff for the fantastic work they do, and this resident involvement is really at the heart of the Milford Care ethos. It's also an opportunity for us to thank our incredible staff, of whom we are exceptionally proud."
