Warning of increase in Van 'Spot Checks'

Van fleets ‘to face compliance crackdown’ with tightening van compliance legislation

Warning of a more aggressive stance in the proactive 'spot checking of vans’ and significant rise in fines and penalty points for any non-compliant vehicles – with the possibility of custodial sentences for Company Directors.

That is the stark warning issued by Mark Cartwright (pictured, above), head of vans and light commercial
vehicles at the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

Van owners can look forward to a crackdown by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), thanks to mounting concerns over slipshod maintenance and overloading.

These workshops are a collaborative initiative to inform Company Directors and their Fleet Managers of the new focus being placed upon van compliance by the DVSA and HSE. With the tightening of legislation and changes in the law introduced during the past 18 months, the enforcement authorities have found there to be wide spread ignorance of the laws and legislation governing company vans. In an effort to raise awareness, the enforcement agencies are promoting initiatives like these Fleet Compliance Awareness Workshops, in conjunction with other interested parties and influencers. This is a prelude to a more aggressive stance in the proactive 'spot checking of vans’ on the highways to ensure compliance and raise the awareness through issuing fines and penalty points to any non-compliant vehicles, drivers and companies.

Whether you attend or not is a decision for you – failure to comply with the legislation governing it will put you, your company reputation and potentially the safety of your employees and the general public at risk.
