Lincoln regeneration led by council bravery says construction firm

Lincoln is a thriving city where opportunities for growth are plentiful, but it needs to shout louder if it is to be recognised on a larger stage according to David Reid, operations manager at Willmott Dixon following a panel debate held in the city.

David is heading the development of the new Lincoln Transport Hub in the centre of the city, which will transform the area surrounding the train station with improvements to public realm, brand new car parking facilities as well as a modern access into the city and a state-of-the-art bus station.

“The Transport Hub is a hugely important part of what is happening in Lincoln; it is one of a number of regeneration schemes taking place in the city at the moment, which will help to push it forwards.

“The City of Lincoln Council has been incredibly brave, I think. The Transport Hub is a large-scale redevelopment and many local authorities would not have had to courage to take it on, but Lincoln did and it is an important driver for growth in the city. It is helping the city to thrive and grow.

“It has been the catalyst for projects like the Cornhill, which have been long-awaited in the city. We are seeing significant investment from the likes of the Co-Op already; from here you won’t be able to stop it. The city will continue to thrive.”

Lincoln on the wider stage

“Lincoln is a wonderful city with so many great stories to tell, but if it is to push itself to the fore on the national and international stage, it needs to shout louder about its successes.

“We need to go back 20 years to when the university chose to locate in the city centre to see just how far the city has come. Lincoln has transformed in that time from a beautiful, historic city to one which is thriving.

“You cannot underestimate the positive impact that the university has had on the city both in terms of its own investment but also the huge economic benefit of playing host to thousands of students who will eat and drink in the pubs and bars, visit the shops and so on.

“I really think that it will go from strength to strength from here, but as a city we need to be making more of what we have. The Midlands Engine is pressing on and Lincoln needs to be an important part of that.

“Connectivity is absolutely key. Whether that be in terms of transport – which is obviously taking huge steps forward thanks to the Transport Hub development with a brand new state-of-the-art bus station as well as behind the scenes with discussions with rail operators about opening up travel to London and so on – or in terms of high speed broadband to support business.

“Lincoln and the wider county is full of real gems and we need to harness that and ensure that our voices are heard. The city is a hub of innovation and growth and it is important that continues.”
