Nottingham celebrates 70 years of Pakistan's independence

TO CELEBRATE Pakistan’s 70th Independence Day the Pakistan Forum Nottingham pulled out all the stops to commemorate the momentous anniversary and recognise achievement in the local community.

The event, which was held at Excelsior Suites, Nottingham, included the forum’s Achievement Awards – a highlight in the community’s social calendar. The event was attended by more than 600 guests, including Halimah Khaled the Mayor the Borough of Broxtowe, Ahmar Ismail Vice Council of Pakistan High Commission and Michael Edwards the Lord Mayor of Nottingham.

The Pakistan Forum Achievement Awards recognise outstanding contributions or achievements made by members of the Pakistani community in and around Nottingham. Categories ranged from awards for excellence in profession to service to the community.

Quammar Zamman, chairman of the Pakistan Forum Nottingham, said: “We organised this fantastic event to mark the 70th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence and to celebrate all the good work that Pakistanis are doing, in and around Nottingham, which contribute to its thriving business community.

“Pakistan Forum Nottingham was set up in 1999 as a way to help integrate the Pakistani community in Nottingham and lift negative stereotypes, which sadly still exist within the world.”

The evening, hosted by Zaki Khan of ZK Events and Saima Salim of Radio Faza, included live performances from Pakistani artists Tariq Khan, Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan and Deeba Kiran. Guests also enjoyed a children’s performance, presentations and more.

Quammar added: “It’s been great to celebrate the key business and academic contributions that the Pakistani community are continuing to achieve within the city.”
