NEW COFFEE SHOP AND EATERY OPENS AT LINCOLN LANDMARK

LINCOLN’S most well-loved coffee brand is delighted to welcome customers into its new café which has opened in the city’s historic Lawn complex following an £2m refurbishment.

LINCOLN’S most well-loved coffee brand is delighted to welcome customers into its new café which has opened in the city’s historic Lawn complex following an £2m refurbishment.

Stokes’ new coffee shop and eatery opened its doors this week, which is not only serving delicious food and drinks in an idyllic and stylish setting, but also doing its bit for the environment by housing Lincolnshire’s first electric bike station.

The 60-seat café is Stokes’ third to open in Lincoln and a fantastic addition to the Bailgate where people can enjoy homemade food – and of course Stokes’ signature, bespoke-blended teas and coffees.

Nick Peel, managing director of Stokes said:

“I am thrilled with the new café which provides a tranquil and friendly setting for people to relax and soak up the atmosphere of The Lawn’s wonderful atmosphere and impressive stature. The opening of the café marks a momentous time for Stokes which has been roasting and serving coffee in Lincoln for more than a century.”

The new café has been renovated with a full refurbishment and designed with Stokes’ environmentally-friendly ethos in mind. Furniture has been upcycled, shelves constructed using scaffolding and the historic wooden floor and lights have been revamped after spending their former lives in The Lawn’s theatre.

Nick added:

“As well as using old artefacts salvaged from our warehouse on Mint Lane, we also commissioned contemporary artist Ptolemy Elrington to create one of his renowned environmentally-inspired pieces. Coffee machine parts have been used to form a body of a whale which has been placed on the ceiling to create a spectacle for customers to enjoy and reflect on how waste is affecting our seas and oceans’ habitats and species.”

The sympathetic renovation of the old building retains the former mental health facility’s charming features, whist injecting a contemporary and modern feel that has transported the former hospital into the 21st century.

Stokes’ new café is just a small element of the overall renovation of The Lawn, which has taken around two years to complete. The monumental site is also home to a theatre, office space and roastery where Stokes’ famous tea and coffee is produced and dispatched to other cafes, restaurants and shops across the UK. A high-end restaurant is set to open within the building next year.

Nick continued:

“It is a great pleasure and privilege to bring this historic building back life and continue to develop Stokes, whilst remaining loyal to its traditional values. I am sure my great grandad, who founded the company back in 1901 would be very proud.”

Stokes has received support from the regional growth fund which is operated through the Lincolnshire chamber of commerce and Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, managed through Lincolnshire County Council.
