It is the first major homebuilder in the UK to adopt this technology, which will take wood waste from its BDW Bedrooms factory, from where it makes bedroom furniture and fittings for its thousands of new homes at developments across the country, and use it to heat the facility.
As well as removing its wood waste output, which was previously around one tonne per day, it will also reduce the company’s carbon output by approximately 80 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, as well as saving money on heating and waste removal.
Richard Peel, Operations Director at B D Living, said, “We manufacture thousands of items of furniture at our BDW Bedrooms factory, resulting in wood waste, so it makes good sense to update to a biomass boiler. This sophisticated piece of equipment will have paid for itself in just three years and will help us to become a more environmentally responsible company.”
Barratt Developments is working towards a corporate target of a 10% reduction in waste (tonnes per thousand square foot) by 2020, plus a 10% reduction in carbon emissions (measured as tonnes of CO2e per 1000sqft build, based on a 2015 baseline) by 2025.
Sarah Pratt, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Barratt Developments, said; “The investment we’re making at BD Living is part of our commitment to be the leading national sustainable housebuilder, and this project will improve business efficiency and reduce our carbon emissions, whilst supporting job creation in the low carbon economy.”
Barratt Developments was recently named as the most successful company based in Leicestershire, following an increase in annual turnover to £4.235 billion. The company owns Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes, Barratt London and the Wilson Bowden Developments commercial property business.
Barratt and David Wilson Homes have both been awarded the maximum five star official rating from the Home Builders Federation (HBF) for the eighth year in a row. The news was announced after more than 20,000 new home buyers across the country took part in this year’s HBF customer satisfaction survey.
