Newby Castleman’s team hoping to make a splash at Swimarathon

Leading firm of chartered accountants, Newby Castleman, is gearing up to take part in Oadby Rotary Club’s second annual Swimarathon event.

Newby Castleman, which has offices in Leicester and Loughborough, will be Gold sponsors of the Swimarathon for the second year running and will be entering a team of swimmers again.

The Swimarathon, taking place on Sunday 26th February at Parklands Leisure Centre in Oadby, will help to raise money for a number of local charities and international projects.

In addition to entering a team in the relay competition, whereby the winners will be the team which swims the most lengths within an allocated time, John Griffin, partner at the firm’s Leicester office, will be the event compere again.

Swimming for Newby Castleman will be team captain, Caroline Walpole, alongside Theresa Gutteridge, Claire Percival, Sarah Booker, Lesley Frost and Richard Molloy.

John Griffin, partner at Newby Castleman, said: “Our swimmers really enjoyed the experience of entering the competition last year, so we’re delighted to be back again for the 2017 Swimarathon and are proud to be Gold sponsors of the event for the second year running.

This is a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for some very worthwhile causes, and have a lot of fun while we are doing it, so it’s fantastic to be a part of the Swimarathon once again.

Our team of swimmers completed a total of 150 lengths in the relay competition last year, so they’ll be aiming to do even better this time around.”

Seven local charities will share 60% of the proceeds from the Swimarathon, with the remainder going towards the Jaipur Limb Camp Project and the General Purposes Fund of the Rotary Club of Oadby Charitable Trust, which provides funding for aid when a disaster occurs in the UK or internationally.

The Jaipur Limb Camp Project offers support and treatment for amputees, polio victims and those born with serious limb malformation in India. With money raised from the Swimarathon, the project will be able to take the treatment to the patients, removing the need for a long journey to a permanent facility. Trained technicians travel to the camp with the materials and equipment needed to make and fit artificial limbs or calipers, restoring independence and dignity to patients.

Local charities to benefit will include Action Homeless, Community First Responders Oadby & Wigston, Hope Against Cancer, Healing Little Hearts, Rainbows Hospice, LOROS and Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre. In total, last year’s event raised £10,000 for its nominated charities.
