The scheme, operated by local organisation Leicestershire Cares, brings together a range of businesses - operating across Leicestershire and Rutland - with prospective employees looking for work experience, providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills in their desired industry.

James, 29, who was referred to the project in June 2016, has since been employed by Willmott Dixon in the role of a labourer, thanks to his hard work and the organisation’s support.

Mark Hill, senior building manager at Willmott Dixon, worked with The Wire Project to provide James with a two-week placement, he said: “It was clear from the outset James had an excellent work ethic and maintained good time keeping, attendance and amiability with the other members of staff on site. We believed James deserved a real chance to demonstrate his clear desire to build a successful career in construction and we were pleased to be able to offer him that chance.”

In order to progress his career, James required a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card as a prerequisite to securing suitable employment which he was struggling to secure. However, thanks to the WIRE Project, he received the relevant training and funding he required to gain one, helping him to secure his placement with Willmott Dixon.

Speaking of his new role, James said: “The opportunity and support The WIRE Project gave me was brilliant and I want to say thank you so much to both them and Willmott Dixon, which have given me a real chance by offering me a job at the end of the placement.”

During his time with Willmott Dixon, James worked on a £10m project to rehouse Birkett House School in Wigston, Leicestershire, to an ultra-modern premises at the Wigston secondary schools campus.

Mark added: “We’re pleased to have James as part of the team at Willmott Dixon and look forward to seeing him progress in the coming months and years into a well-rounded, dedicated and highly skilled construction professional.”
